Project summary

Scope and application context

This project involved corrosion protection work at the bottom edge of storage tanks at an Oiltanking facility in Qingdao, China. The interface between the tank shell, annular edge area and concrete foundation is exposed to water ingress, coating deterioration and movement associated with changing tank operating conditions. Zhuohuang supplied a cold-applied petrolatum tape system designed for this irregular and movement-sensitive area.

Project challenge

Protection requirement

The tank shell-to-foundation interface contained transitions, gaps and existing coating areas that required a flexible protection approach. The system needed to conform to the edge geometry, seal vulnerable interfaces and accommodate movement between the tank structure and foundation without relying on hot-applied installation.

System used

Cold-applied protection system

  1. Petrolatum Primer
  2. Elastic / Profiling Mastic
  3. Petrolatum Tape
  4. Metal Protective Outer Wrap
  5. Outer Wrap Primer
  6. Elastomeric Finishing Layer

Installation process

Recorded application sequence

  1. Surface inspection and removal of loose contamination and deteriorated material.
  2. Preparation of the tank shell and concrete foundation interface.
  3. Application of petrolatum primer.
  4. Filling of gaps and formation of a smooth transition using elastic profiling mastic.
  5. Installation of petrolatum tape across the protected edge area.
  6. Installation of the metal protective outer wrap.
  7. Application of the confirmed outer finishing layers.

Project evidence

Before Construction

Before installation, the tank edge area showed typical protection challenges at the shell-to-foundation interface, including deteriorated coating areas, exposed transitions and locations vulnerable to water entry.
