Coastal Steel Structure and Bolted Connection Corrosion Protection

Salt-laden air, wet–dry cycling, condensation and ultraviolet exposure concentrate corrosion at anchor bolts, base plates, gussets, brackets and other irregular steel details. This application route keeps connection protection separate from continuous pipeline and field-joint wrapping, so the system follows the geometry and exposure zone.

Protect the node, not just the member

Coastal steelwork rarely corrodes as a perfectly flat surface. Water and salt can remain around bolt heads, washers, connection plates, weld toes and the steel-to-concrete interface. A flat coating repair may leave a void or a sharp termination, while a flexible wrap can be shaped around the complete detail and reopened for future inspection.

Build a continuous barrier around the irregular geometry

The exact products, overlap, coverage and outer-layer build-up remain subject to the current TDS, the approved method statement and a review of the site condition.

01 · Prepare

Inspect and clean the accessible steel

Remove loose rust, scale, grease and contaminants. Record the condition of the bolts, plate edges, welds and surrounding coating before deciding whether external wrapping is appropriate.

02 · Profile

Fill crevices and sharp transitions

Use the selected primer, paste or mastic where the method requires it. Shape a continuous, wrap-friendly profile behind bolt heads and around recessed connection geometry.

03 · Wrap

Encapsulate the complete node

Apply the primary cold-applied wrap across the prepared steel, bolt cluster and transitions. Keep terminations accessible for inspection and follow the approved overlap detail.

04 · Protect

Match the outer layer to the exposure

For sunlit or weather-exposed connections, an aluminium foil composite outer wrap can provide the selected reflective and weather-facing layer. Mechanical armour may be reviewed where impact or abrasion is expected.

05 · Verify

Inspect continuity and records

Check that voids are filled, the wrap is continuous, edges are sealed and the finished detail is recorded with photographs and the material batch information required by the project.

06 · Maintain

Leave a practical inspection path

A cold-applied system can be opened and reinstated as part of planned maintenance. The final inspection interval and any access requirements are set by the asset owner and project engineer.

Choose by object and exposure

One site can need more than one corrosion protection system

A pipeline, its field joint and the steel support beside it are different objects. Their protection should not be collapsed into one generic recommendation.

Coastal atmospheric connection

For anchor bolts, base plates and exposed irregular nodes, the starting direction is typically a petrolatum primary wrap with profiling mastic where needed and an exposure-selected outer layer. Coastal chloride, UV and access conditions are flagged for technical review.

Underground or trench connection

Confined, damp or intermittently flooded connection details may favour a viscoelastic route because the paste and tape can conform around recesses. Confirm water conditions, existing coating compatibility and any owner standard before ordering.

Continuous pipeline or field joint

Use the dedicated pipeline pathway instead. PE or reinforced PP may be required for a new buried wrap, while a field-joint repair can need a viscoelastic transition system. Soil stress and cathodic-protection requirements change the selection.

Coastal bolted connection FAQ

Can the same structure use different systems?

Yes. The connection, continuous member, buried section and splash or tidal zone can each have a different exposure and geometry. Select the layer build-up by zone and confirm transitions in the method statement.

Should a pipe and its support be entered together?

No. Enter the pipeline or field joint as its own object, then assess the support, base plate or anchor detail as a steel connection. This prevents a pipeline wrap from being shown as the answer for a bolted node.

What information should be sent for a proposal?

Share the connection type, bolt and plate dimensions, treated area or a simple sketch, exposure zone, current condition, operating temperature, access limits and photographs. The configurator can provide a planning estimate, then our technical team checks the documents.
